Professional Citris Juice Presser

(No Joke)

On your next trip to Israel, you'll notice that fresh juice is a big thing. Go to any juice stand throughout the country and you'll see everyone is using the same citris juicer. Shop owners will claim that not only is it the best juicer in Israel, it is the best juicer in the world. And it's made on a Kibbutz in the desert called Holit. You wouldn't know that they have such a winning product based on their website (now defunct- they should really contact JerusaHost ASAP to get some professional and reliable web hosting) but aesthetics tend to take the backseat to the security situation. At least that's a popular excuse people have for ignoring issues relating to environment, organization, sustainabitliy, and general planning. It often means that they lose in the PR arena.

This really is a solid juicer. I spent a couple months surveying related products and finally went ahead and bought one. Retails for between 800 and 1100 shekels but you can find them at the Shuk Hapishpashim in Tel Aviv for 700. Caveat: store owners in Jerusalem would hard to bargain with. One owner claimed that the vendors at Shuk Hapishpashim do not pay Amona or taxes on this product and are therefore able to sell it for less (700 vs. 800 shekels). However, a Tel Aviv shop owner showed me his receipt and it appears that on 10 pieces he paid 550 shekels/piece + about 60 shekels tax on each.

Description:

  • seems like it weighs about 4.5 Kilos or 10 Lbs.
  • green paint
  • metal body
  • plastic juicing tray

It is really sturdy. Everyone you talk to will tell you this machine "will last a lifetime".

No doubt. Another advantage of this make over another is the amount of juice it extracts. It is calibrated to squeeze as much out of the fruit as possible. Furthermore, it also does grapefruit and pomegrantes.

The only flaw I've found is that a little bit of the paint has chipped off (could just be this unit).

Points to note from the Holit website:

"The combination of our agricultural knowledge with technology in the area of juice extractors has led to the development of excellent products to extract juice from all kind of citrus fruits and from pomegranates."

"Most of the components are epoxy-coated for durability. Other metal parts are coated with nickel. The plastic parts, which come into contact with the fruit and juice, meet F.D.A regulations."

I'm writing this out of sheer joy from using this juicer. The oranges in Israel are amazing and it is fun to press your own juice. 3 small oranges make a nice glass of juice. Holit Juice Extractor all the way!

in Jerusalem at the Shuk (as you are walking down Agrippas street towards the Central bus station), there's a shop on your right hand side. They sell them for about 750 shekels. You could probably find them for about 700 in Tel Aviv at the Shuk Hapishpashim. Good luck!

Paint chipping seems to be a common and recurring problem.
